What is a Computer Network Router?

A Computer Network Router is a device used to connect more than one computer to a single home connection. If you have more than one computer in your home and would like to be able to surf the Internet on both, broadband Internet provides this ability easily. Some providers allow you to rent home networking equipment from them for a small fee per month. However routers are not like modems and can be used with either DSL or Cable Internet so its best to purchase your own to save you money in the long run since you can use it with any provider you choose.

These Computer Network Routers take the signal from your ISP and "route" the information to the computer that is requesting it. Some routers require configuration to work properly with the connection you are using, DSL for example will require you to go to the Modems internal page to set the user name and password just as you do when connecting via your computer. Cable Internet usually works without any needed configuration.

Almost all Computer Network Routers have a internal homepage that allows configuration of the router itself. Everything from firewall setup to port mapping can be done via its control panel page. Its advised to know how to use and set up your router to set up a secure home network.
