    Fiber-optic communication is the transmitting of information from place to place by way of light through an optical fiber. The light creates an electromagnetic carrier wave that is modulated to carry information.


    Because fiber optic connections have much lower attenuation it is much faster and more efficient than existing copper wire in long-distance and high-demand applications. The prices for fiber-optic communications have dropped considerably since the year 2000 and now is are more cost efficient to build and maintain than traditional coper wiring.


    Fiber to the premises (FTTP) is fiber-optic service in which an optical fiber is run directly onto the customers premiss unlike other fiber delivery methods all of which depend upon much slower methods such as copper wires or coaxial cable for last part of the delivery . In the United States, the largest FTTP deployment to date is Verizon's FiOS. Verizon is the only Regional Bell Operating Company thus far to deploy fiber optic connections on a large scale.


    Verizon fios is the only provider to be able to offer large scale deployment of fiber optic connectuons and offers it in select areas of the united states.
