DSL Connections
DSL is a technology that provides digital data transmission over your current local telephone network. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) used to be know as Digital Subscriber Loop but most people have adopted digital subscriber line as the most marketing friendly.
DSL connectiions work by splitting your current phone line into High and Low frequencies. DSL connections run on the high band, while your phone line runs on the low band. DSL usually requires you to add small filters to your phones to filter out everything except the low frequencies. This creates 2 independent bands allowing you to both talk and surf with only one phone line.
In the case of price competition in Internet access, prices and speeds caused their fees to drop significantly making dsl more economical than dial up access. Telephone companies were forced to switch to DSL connections mostly because of the cable companies that offered similar speeds. Demand for high bandwidth applications and video also make DSL a popular choice.
Most Home DSL lines today have speeds that range from 256kb/s download speed to 15mb/s download speed. DSL connections are statistically more reliable when it comes to speeds as your bandwidth cap is your own and not shared with anyone.
